This is set in the "Tales from the Blind Pig" universe.
The arrangements had been made, the apartment packed up and ready to load. All our stuff had been packed into a series of stacking rolling crates and was ready to load up into the truck that was coming by in a days time. We were reduced to living out of a large-ish suitcase and either take-out food or stuff we had left in the fridge (Not much). Kerry had gotten the sleeping bag out (as what furniture we had was dismantled and/or packed up, and we were idly chatting about the scary future in front of us. The small LCD TV we had was showing a pair of talking heads go on and on and on about the new law, it's alleged constitutionality, etc. I turned it off. "Hey! I was watching that!" Kerry snapped at me. I shrugged. "It has been the same rhetoric for the past 48 hours. They can talk all they want, but they keep ignoring the real situation which is about to blow, if I am reading the 'real world' indicators correctly."
She grudgingly admitted that I was right. She moved around in the sleeping bag in an attempt to get comfortable. "I'll be sooo happy when we get moved back in at the new place. It'll be nice to sleep in a real bed instead of this sleeping bag." I chuckled. "And it will be nice to get the sleeping pad out, although this carpet is not too bad, actually." She turned to look at me, and my gaze caught hers. "You really are scared, aren't you." She stated it as a fact, and my silent nod told her volumes more then anything I could say. "Well, I'm scared too, but you knew that already." I nodded. The next few minutes were filled with the silence of a running apartment: the hum of the air conditioner, the gentle hum of the refrigerator, the steady buzz of a night light that we kept on in the hallway. I screwed my courage up and commanded my voder to silence as I pulled my throat up into something resembling human. "I have something important to ask you." She looked at me, and nodded silently. "I think I do as well. You want to go first?" I nodded.
"Kerry, we have been friends for a while." An understatement at best, we had become friends within a month of my hiring her as an assistant. "We are on the edge of something that changes our lives, good or bad. I do not know what will happen to us. The world outside is getting worse, and I know that Grumpy is getting us out in the morning. I can think of nothing but wanting to see the events that happen next happen with the two of us together. Will you-mphftph" Kerry had clamped her hand on my muzzle, forcing it closed. "A bit verbose, you are. I'll finish it. Will you marry me?" She released her \ hand, and I nodded. "I'll have you, if you'll have me." I winked at the end of my statement. "There's just one problem," she said. "I don't think we can get you a ring." I nodded, letting my throat drop back down. Commanding my voder back online, I stated. "Not practical, given my anatomy. An ear ring or a bracelet would work though." Kerry looked at me. "Where would we put a bracelet?" I chuckled. "My tail, for one. It is one thing that does not change shape. And I seem to keep it even when I force myself as far human as possible."
There was little left to say that night. We both hugged and lay down to face the adventure that awaited us the next morning. Although I did wake up with her head snuggled behind mine.
Alex was taking handwritten notes in addition to the video, and I waited patiently as he finished up. "So, are you going to tell me about the riots now?" I shook my head. "Not yet. there's a few more things I can relate before I'm willing to go into it." Alex nodded. "OK. So, when was the ceremony and honeymoon?" I chuckled. "Well, the ceremony occurred after the move, and the honeymoon was... interesting as well. Um, speaking of which, what sort of censoring is going on with the book?" Alex thought for a second. "well, I'll edit out anything that's not exactly appropriate for publication." I nodded. "Booster, pause recording and call Kerry's cell." The AVIS responded with an acknowledgment and a series of dialtones. Scant seconds later Kerry's dulcet tones reverberated through the room. "What now? Something blow up?" I laughed. "Question: How much am I to tell our son about the honeymoon?" Kerry's tone changed from mock seriousness to silly. "As much as you feel comfortable with. I've no secrets." I nodded. "Just wanted to ask, because I was going to related the first time around with the horizontal limbo, and what happened afterward." Kerry laughed. "I guess so, he's old enough to know all about that stuff anyway. Maya's egging me on as well from here, and I've already talked to her about the birds, bees, and cross-species sex." I heard something in the background, and the Kerry added in, "Gotta run fuzzy. Talk to ya later." She disconnected, leaving me mortified. Alex nudged me after a few minutes. "Dad, your ears are beet red." I started chuckling. "Well, I guess thinking back on that, it was kinda funny..."
Onward!.
